The value of a go to pair of heels cannot be overstated. When your friends suggest an impromptu meet up for dinner or you get a last minute invite to a soiree, having a chic pair of heels that are incredibly comfortable yet play nice with all of the other items in your closet, can in fact save you from a ‘WTF, I have nothing to wear‘ induced meltdown. Crisis avoided.

Much like Goldilocks’ incessant search for the perfect chair, bed and porridge– The search for the go-to heel will take time and dedication. This process is deeply personal and should not be rushed. Lest you fall victim to the dreaded buyer’s remorse. Consider quality, comfort and versatility when choosing your go to heels.

Quality

At the risk of sounding like literally every other fashion blog/ magazine, I’ll spare you the bullshit spiel about investment pieces. Because the word investment is highly up to interpretation. If you’re working as an editorial assistant, chances are that entry level salary is barely covering rent and the occasional Starbucks run. Telling you to *invest* in a $600+ pair of shoes is laughable– also, terrible financial advice. No to mention, a steep price tag is not always an indicator of superior quality. My suggestion? Find a pair of heels that fit your budget and your lifestyle. Whether you find it at Zara or Bergdorf’s, remember to keep an open mind and pay attention to details that are telltale signs of poor quality.

Comfort

This one seems obvious, but beware of shoes that look super cute but aren’t at all functional. I’m looking at you, Christian Louboutin. There’s no sense in teetering around like a newborn calf because your shoes are literally killing your feet. That doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a lifetime of kitten heels and granny shoes. There are certainly stylish shoes that are also comfortable. Like these Valentino Rockstud dupes I’m wearing in this outfit. People are always shocked when I tell them how comfortable they are. I can dance in them all night and still live to tell about it the next morning.

Versatility

One can buy the highest quality, most comfortable heels but if they are not a team player– meaning they can play nice with and compliment a variety of items in your closet– chances are that you won’t wear them as often. Does that mean you have to go out and get the most bland, boring pair of shoes out there? No. Look for heels with an interesting detail or texture, but are still a neutral shade and will pair easily with lots of items. Take the heels I’m wearing in this outfit. I could have just worn a plain black pump, but the gold studs give it a little something extra, no?

About The Look

I paired this blush skirt with a black crop top. Notice the PVC texture on the front of the skirt. That paired with the pencil skirt silhouette and split back made this a no brainer. To pull the look together, I wore this lovely black crop top from Forever 21. The heels are from Necessary Clothing– One of my favorite boutiques here in NYC.

I shot this look with Arkeem of 5 Element Photography. His talent never ceases to amaze me! We came to the waterfront in Long Island City. It’s so pretty there and I thought it would make the perfect setting for this shoot.
