New York Fashion Week is a fun and exciting time of year. While it’s always a blast, fashion week can also be incredibly hectic and stressful– especially if you are unprepared. Here are five items that you may not have thought to bring that will make your life immensely easier.
I kept this list short because I had practicality in mind. I’ve seen a million of these what to bring to fashion week posts and they tend to list odds and ends that would be nice to have, but aren’t truly essentials and quite frankly wouldn’t fit into that cute little Chloe Drew bag they’re toting around. So here are 5 essentials that I actually bring with me to New York Fashion Week.
Portable Phone Charger
Social media is an integral part of the fashion week experience. If your phone dies, then you can’t Instagram or Snapchat that amazing Givenchy runway show you just attended. If you don’t post it on the gram or Snapchat, did it ever even happen? Enough said. Get a portable charger because while there are outlets around, chances are you’ll be standing in line waiting for other people to charge up as well.
Flats
I cannot stress this enough. Unless you are a high roller who can afford to Uber or cab it to every show, you absolutely need to carry a small pair of flats with you. When you’re racing back and forth between shows you don’t want a staggeringly high pair of heels slowing you down. Just remember to change back into your heels a few blocks before you get to your destination. You want to look your best for those street style photographers!
Camera & Equipment
This is pretty obvious, but I wanted to point out some not so obvious items to bring along with your camera. If you’re a fashion blogger, be sure to bring an extra battery and extra memory card. When you’re photographing the models coming down the runway, it’s easy to get carried away and snap a ton of photos. This not only drains your camera battery but those images also take up a ton of space on your memory card.
Last year I was covering fashion week for work and my camera battery died in the middle of a show. I ran to an electronics store nearby to buy a new battery, only for the memory card to fill up shortly thereafter. I was beyond annoyed and frustrated. Learn from my mistakes and always be prepared with backups.
Business Cards
New York Fashion Week is the perfect time to network and get to meet some really amazing people. Between shows it’s fun to chat it up with the fellow attendees. If you guys hit it off you should definitely find a way to keep in touch! While trading Instagram handles is the norm these days, nothing says “I mean business” like a nice polished set of business cards.
Oil Blotting Sheets
Do not underestimate the power of blotting sheets. During the summer my skin gets oily beyond belief. Too often I have fallen victim to the shiny forehead in photos. Don’t be like me. Bring blotting wipes.
